Brazilian Butt Lift or Bust? This area of surgery is growing rapidly, accordingly to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (“BAAPS” is the genuine acronym!) 38,274 cosmetic surgery procedures were carried out in the UK in 2010, a 5% increase on 2009. Of these procedures, female Breast Augmentation operations are the most common, although Gynaecomastia operations (the male breast reduction operation) increased by 27.5%. In addition an increased variety of procedures are becoming available including hair transplants, nose jobs, face lifts, tummy tucks, even toe shortening and the Brazilian Butt lift! As more people go under the knife the industry is making procedures more affordable to the general public, offering payment plans, discounts on multiple procedures and even BOGOF offers. Statistics reveal that 25% of people who have plastic surgery have some type of complication ranging from mild infection, bruises, asymmetry, marks or an incorrect procedure. When expectations have not been managed reasonably this can leave patients devastated by the results. All of these issues have caused cosmetic surgery litigation to become a dramatically growing area of clinical negligence. Despite the growth of this industry, many people may feel awkward discussing their situation with a stranger. Some people may feel that they have no options available to them to pursue their complaints against the provider or cannot afford further corrective surgery to improve their situation. Rhiannon Jones of this firm has recently been successful in a claim against a well known National company that regularly advertises in lifestyle magazines who had negligently left our Client, Sophie, with significantly asymmetrical breasts following a Breast Augmentation operation. Sophie did not want to return to the same surgeon and therefore came to us to assist her in obtaining not only the money required for corrective surgery elsewhere but damages for the physiological effects that the negligent surgery had on her and her family life. When discussing Curtis’ approach with her matter, Sophie said “I found Curtis amazing when dealing with such a delicate subject. The money I have received has actually changed my life”.
